The Intermission and Lisson are pleased to present New Work: 2026, a solo exhibition by Tishan Hsu. Since the mid-1980s, Tishan Hsu (b. 1951, Boston) has been at the forefront of exploring how technology’s advancements reflect humanity.  

In the 80s and 90s, Hsu approached this by investigating the intersections of organic and artificial life via the body and the screen. Most recently, and far before our current intelligence boom, Hsu has been questioning the line between humanity and technology, between engineer and machine, between us and them. This four-decade exploration has made him one of the most prescient voices in contemporary art today. ​

This most recent body of work incorporates AI-generated imagery manipulated by the Artist, creating a dialogue within the works between multiple entities of contribution. Images of ear-like-orifices are integrated into industrial and pastural landscapes. Using UV-cured inkjet printing, screenprinting, and silicone casting, Hsu applies these images to a rounded board, continuing his screen-like mount that he has been using since the 80s. Hsu then applies a vibrant color to the back of these boards to give the effect of a screen’s glow. 

Hsu’s use of hybridized images of the body with technology, and now the greater natural world, probes the permeable boundaries between the material and virtual realms we live in where natural structures dissolve into more fluid, mutable embodiments of their functions. The work uses physicality and virtual presence to propose unfolding interfaces that are forming an “emerging human syntax,” materially, conceptually, and cognitively.

Tishan Hsu (b. 1951, Boston) lives and works in New York. His work has been widely exhibited internationally, with recent solo presentations at the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto (2024), Secession in Vienna (2023-24), and MAMCO in Geneva (2024). He has participated in major group exhibitions such as The Milk of Dreams at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) and Is it morning for you yet? at the 58th Carnegie International (2022).
